Shirl was raised in West Virginia, then Ohio, and lived in North Carolina for the past 27 years. She has lived in poverty all her life, and struggled with a variety of health issues.
Her story is one of facing food insecurity and the challenges of poverty as a child, and now as a mother of a child with disabilities.
Shirl is also a writer. He manuscript, The Secrets About That Night, is a story of twists and turns, mystery, intrigue and loneliness. She hopes to self-publish her book in 2016 and welcomes the advice and support of other authors who have gone this route.
